What do your skin issues and gardening have in common?

Happy Tuesday, Reader!

This week's topic is all about SKIN.⠀⠀

When it comes to tackling skin issues, most of us seek quick fixes, such as creams and ointments that claim to clear our skin faster than we know it can. But in reality, those types of treatments should be left as a last resort. The subject of today's email asked what your skin issues & gardening have in common, do you know the answer? Read on to find out!

Why are quick fixes not the solution?

Because the health of our skin is not just skin deep, but rather a sign of a much deeper issue. Have you ever tried a skin product that worked well while you were using it, but then noticed your same problems resurfaced when you ran out? This is a common occurrence and this is why: when you address your skin concerns topically, you are only covering up the symptoms and not addressing the root cause, which is necessary for true healing.

Let's use gardening as an example:

When you need to get rid of the weeds that are taking over your landscape, you don't simply cut off the top of the weeds and call it a day. Although it would be so much easier to do so, truly getting rid of weeds requires time and effort that is pretty laborious. You have to get on your knees, dig and search for the root and pull it out. Otherwise, your weeds will regrow in no time! Same idea when it comes to tackling skin problems. It requires a lot more work and time to pull out the root of the problem, but the results will last MUCH longer (hint: this is the answer to the subject line question 😉).

Ok so, how do I address the root cause?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Although the cause for certain skin conditions can differ from person to person, I promise you that your lifestyle habits are all playing a much larger role than you might think. It may seem like no big deal if you only have a couple of glasses of water per day or if you're unable to sweat or pass a bowel movement regularly...but these are all contributing to the issues you have with your skin. So, don’t fall for that expensive face cream you saw on a commercial that promises miracles, remember-- if it is too good to be true, it probably is. Save yourself the frustration (and $$$) by making some (free) changes first!

A specific treatment plan will look different for everyone and I cannot give personalized medical advice to a group of people via email, but just to get the ball rolling, here are some general habits that are worth taking a look at:

1️⃣ 𝙔𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙬𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙧 𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙖𝙠𝙚 💦

The more water you are drinking the better your skin will look, it’s pure facts! Why? Because water promotes detoxification which is what's responsible for clearing out the excess sebum/bacteria that's clogging up pores and keeping your skin plump and hydrated.

2️⃣ 𝙔𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙙𝙚𝙩𝙤𝙭 𝙥𝙖𝙩𝙝𝙬𝙖𝙮𝙨 💩😅

You have 3 major detox pathways, your options are to sweat it out, pee it out or poop it out. To make sure these pathways are working you need to have enough water 💧, fiber 🥦 and movement💃🏽!

Skin conditions like acne, psoriasis, and rosacea can have an inflammatory component. If you are regularly eating foods that are known to increase inflammation (such as dairy, although there are many others) then you are fighting an uphill battle. Aim to increase your anti-inflammatory foods (like colorful fruits and vegetables) and reduce the inflammation promoters.

BOTTOM LINE: Our skin is a reflection of our internal health, and to truly heal any chronic skin conditions you need to start from within.

I hope this was helpful to you. If you want more personalized guidance on improving your skin health, I'd love to work with you. If you are interested, you are welcome to book an appointment with me whenever you're ready!
